Velma Callahan Bowling, age 75, of Booneville, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, following a brief illness. Velma was born on February 2, 1951, in Oneida, Kentucky, to her devoted parents, Henry and Flora Marshall Callahan.
Throughout her life, Velma embodied kindness, dedication, and a deep sense of community. Her strong faith was evident through her active membership at Indian Creek Presbyterian Church, where she found fellowship and spiritual support. Velma dedicated many years of her career as a cook at the Owsley County Health Care Center before her well-earned retirement. Her commitment to her work and the care she extended to others will be fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
Family was at the very heart of Velma’s world. She is survived by her cherished daughter, Patricia "Keith (Gord)" Bowman, her loving grandson, Kris "Saundra" Bowman, and two dearly loved great-granddaughters, Aubree and Riley Bowman—all of Booneville. Velma also leaves behind her sister, Viola Mayes, and her nephew, Lucas Terry, both of Booneville, as well as several other relatives and friends who will hold her memory close.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, her husband, Clarence Bowling, her sister, Sharon Harris, and her nephew, Brian Mayes. Despite these losses, Velma’s legacy remains in the values she instilled in her family and the warm relationships she fostered throughout her life.
Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of Velma. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Searcy & Strong Funeral Home, 1694 Old Kentucky 11, Booneville, KY 41314. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 pm at the same location, with Brother Terry Sandlin officiating. Burial will take place in the Esau-Gabbard Cemetery.
