Obituary

Howard Wilson Evans, of Booneville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026 at the age of 101.  As the last surviving World War II veteran in the Booneville area, Howard represented a generation whose courage, sacrifice, and dedication helped shape our nation.

Born on September 15, 1924 at Pebworth, KY to Fred and Mattie Ray Evans.  Howard lived a remarkable life that spanned more than a century.  He proudly served his country in the United States Army from May 21, 1943 until April 7, 1946 and was stationed in the Philippines during WWII.  His military service remained a source of great pride throughout his life.  One of the highlights of his later years was participating in the Honor Flight Program on September 17, 2022, where he traveled to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials dedicated to America's veterans and was chosen to lay the wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier.  It was a meaningful and well-deserved tribute to his service and sacrifice.

Howard retired from the Booneville Water Plant after many years of dedicated service.  A faithful member of the Beattyville First Church of God since 1951, he lived his life with quiet faith, humility, and integrity.

He found great joy in farming and working outdoors.  Whether tending his land or spending time on his beloved 1950 Ford 8N tractor, Howard was happiest with his hands busy and surrounded by the beauty of God's creation.  He was known for his strong work ethic, gentle spirit, and willingness to lend a helping hand.

Howard was preceded in death by parents Fred and Mattie Ray Evans, his beloved wife, Mildred Booth Evans; his daughters, Linda Chadwell and Helen Evans; three stillborn infant children; his granddaughter, Candice "Tiny" Chadwell and daughter-in-law, Linda Carmack Evans.  Brothers, Carl Ray, Junior and Bruce Evans, and sister, Beulah Evans.

He is survived by his son, Howard Lee Evans; his daughter, Mary Best; his grandson, Travis Best; and special friend/caretaker Jolly Cooper along with extended family, friends, neighbors, and all who were blessed to know him.

Howard's passing marks the end of an era for the Booneville community.  As the last living World War II veteran in the area, he served as a living reminder of the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation.  His life was defined by service to his country, dedication to his family, devotion to his faith, and a love for the simple pleasures of farm life.

His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and in the freedom he helped preserve for future generations.  He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love, gratitude, and respect.

The following services will be held for Mr. Evans.  Visitation Friday, July 3rd, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Searcy and Strong Funeral Home in Booneville.  Funeral Saturday, July 4th, 2026 at 11:00 am at Beattyville First Church of God with the Reverend Garrett Thomas officiating.  Burial and full Military Honors will follow the funeral at the Howard Evans Family Cemetery in Pebworth, KY.  There will be a meal following the internment at the church.
