Barbara Sue Mayes Turner, 86, of Booneville, Kentucky passed away October 2, 2026 at the Stanton Nursing Center in Stanton, Kentucky following a brief illness.
Barbara was born January 20, 1940 in Owsley County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Abel and Martha McIntosh Mayes and widow of Henry Turner. Barbara was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Turner had a Master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University. After receiving her degree in Elementary Education she became a teacher for the Owsley County School District for 27 years. Mrs. Turner was a former Owsley County Public Library Chair person. She was a member of the Booneville Presbyterian Church and a member of the Owsley County Lion’s Club.
Barbara is survived by two daughters Ms. Rosalind Turner of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, Ms. Michele Turner of Booneville, Kentucky; two granddaughters Ms. Mika Turner of Lexington, Kentucky, Ms. Shania Turner of Lexington, Kentucky; one brother Mr. Larry “Charlene” Mayes of Winchester, Kentucky; one sister Mrs. Bessie “David” Turner of Springboro, Ohio; two brother-in-laws Mr. James Wm Turner & Mr. Cale “Linda” Turner both of Booneville, Kentucky; four sister-in-laws Mrs. Rachel Stamper of Beattyville, Kentucky, Ms. Molly Turner, Ms. Martha Turner and Ms. Mary Turner of Booneville, Kentucky. Several nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by her parents Abel and Martha McIntosh Mayes, her husband Henry Turner, her son Michael Turner, six brothers Donald, Lee, Bradley, Bobby, Eugene Mayes, Forrest Hollan, one sister Virginia Garrett, four brother-in-laws Elliot, Sigel, Raleigh & Leonard Turner, one sister-in-law Wanda Lee Noel.
In lieu of flowers the family has ask that donations be made to the Owsley County Lion’s Club or to the Owsley County Food Bank.
Visitation will start at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 6, 2026 at the Searcy and Strong Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 pm with Brother Stephen Jackson and Brother Terry Sandlin officiating. Burial will follow at the Dave Turner Family Cemetery, Fish Creek, Kentucky.
Pallbearers: Gary Cornett, Chad Mason, Joey Mauck, David Noel, Chris Noel, Mike Gumm & Lucas Gumm. Honorary Pallbearers: Cale Turner, Howard Mayes & Johnny Turner.
Searcy and Strong Funeral Home in charge of all arrangement.
